Changing Cancer Perceptions

ZHdK Master’s Thesis
Dermatologische Klinik, Universitätsspital Zürich

2024
Master’s thesis work that examines the use and perceptual impact of aesthetics in cancer visualization. Offering alternative ways to present cancer to encourage learning and communication of cancer diagnoses and related treatments without causing further fear.

This project was done in cooperation with the Dermatologische Klinik, Universitätsspital Zürich.

Prototype: A “Scrollytelling” page was created to break down the cooperation partner’s multi-drug therapy for metastasizing melanoma to make complex biomedical information more accessible to broader audiences and cancer patients.

Visualizing Cancer

ZHdK Master’s Thesis

2023
Defining aesthetic design principles in biomedical visualization through image analysis research, interviews with biomedical designers, and design experimentation in 3D programs.

Two aesthetic styles that could be used to communicate cancer knowledge to broader audiences were defined: abstract vs. realistic.

Wundertüte

ZHdK
UZH Irchel

2023
Luckybag - Visualizing computerized tomography (CT) scans of various odd specimens including but not limited to seashells, garlic, a banana, fig, cactus, Kinder egg, lighter, and Ferrero Rocher.

WORKSHOP

Art in Science

HLAB
Miyagi-Onagawa, Japan

2024

*Image from HLAB
A seminar designed to teach the importance of scientific illustration in communicating knowledge to broader audiences. Students learned various examples of scientific illustrations, including medical, botanical, zoological, and environmental topics.

The workshop focused on “the art of looking,” where students closely examined scientific illustrations. Students put this skill into practice through observational sketching exercises of plant life in the surrounding environment of Miyagi-Onagawa, Japan.

Visual Communication in Patient Education

ZHdK
Zürich, Switzerland

2023

A workshop created to exchange ideas between design and science experts on effective visual communication in patient education.

This workshop included interactive discussions, in a “debate” style, designed to encourage discourse on how cancer-related topics, such as therapy, should be presented to patients.

Participants were split into two groups and were tasked with defending the use of either calm or ominous aesthetics in the visual communication of cancer. The dialogue of this workshop was used to supplement the thesis: Changing Cancer Perceptions.
